Why We’re Considering a Different Life
We’re an Australian family of four from Brisbane: two parents, two kids, and one increasingly persistent question—what if we sold the house and travelled the world for a while? There’s no firm departure date yet, no perfectly colour-coded plan, and certainly no guarantee that we won’t change our minds halfway through breakfast.
What we do have is a shared desire for more time together, fewer rushed mornings, and the chance to experience places beyond our usual routines. Long-term travel sounds exciting, but it also raises practical questions about money, work, schooling, health, belongings, and whether four people can share one small space without anyone dramatically announcing that they need a minute.
The Work Behind the Dream
This journey begins well before we board a plane. We’re looking honestly at what our house is worth, what it costs to live, how much we need to save, and whether selling is the right choice. We’re also thinking about remote work, travel budgets, insurance, visas, and the everyday expenses that glossy travel stories tend to skip.
There are emotional decisions too. Leaving a familiar home and a stable routine can feel liberating one day and completely reckless the next. We’re making progress, changing our minds, and learning as we go.
Making Family Travel Work
Our children’s education is an important part of the plan. We’re exploring flexible schooling options and considering how travel could support learning through language, culture, history, and plenty of real-world problem solving. It won’t always be seamless, but it may be meaningful.
Following Along
This is a practical, honest account of planning long-term family travel: the numbers, decisions, doubts, small wins, and occasional chaos. If you’re an Australian parent dreaming about a different life, we hope these stories help you feel less alone—and perhaps a little more ready to work out your own next step.
