Why We’re Considering a Different Life
We’re an Australian family of four from Brisbane: two parents, two kids, one house, and a growing feeling that the standard path may not be the only option. We’re considering selling our home, leaving our 9-to-5 jobs, and travelling the world for the long term. There’s no firm departure date yet, and that’s an important part of the story. This isn’t a polished escape plan. It’s an idea we’re testing in real time.
The Practical Work Behind the Dream
Long-term family travel involves more than choosing exciting destinations. We’re working through the numbers, including the likely proceeds from selling our house, travel costs, insurance, visas, flights, accommodation, and an emergency fund. We’re also thinking carefully about schooling, healthcare, work, belongings, and what happens when the plan changes. Some weeks bring progress; others bring spreadsheets, second thoughts, and several conversations that begin with, “Are we sure this is sensible?”
Honest Planning, Doubts Included
We want to document the decisions rather than only the highlights. That means sharing what we learn about downsizing, saving, preparing children for a major change, and stepping away from familiar routines. It also means admitting when we’re nervous. Selling the house and leaving secure employment can sound brave from a distance, but up close it can feel exciting, confusing, and occasionally ridiculous.
What We Hope to Discover
This journey is about more than collecting passport stamps. We’re exploring how our family wants to spend its time, what “home” might mean, and whether a slower, more flexible life is possible. If you’re an Australian parent dreaming about long-term travel or a different future, we hope our real numbers, practical lessons, and imperfect progress help you think through your own possibilities.
